If you fly into Italy, chances are you’ll either arrive in Milan or Rome, so you’ll definitely be spending time in Milan’s region, Lombardia. Lombardia is the richest region of Italy with Milan, its capital, known to all as the world’s leading city for fashion. It has a large number of monuments such as the elaborate Duomo and you can definitely need a few days just to visit the many sights in Milan. In the northern parts of the region are a few sights that are not to be missed such as the Lake of Como, of Lugano and the Lake Maggiore. The lakeside villages are very nice and good way to take a breather from the bustling city. Take boat trips on the lakes, visit the islands and admire the many villas which decorate the coast (Hello, George Clooney). The city of Como is well worth a visit as well; it’s been an important rival of Milan and it has as much history and as many sights as the bigger city, but without the traffic jams and the crowds. Also the small city of Varese with its lake is worth a visit and a breathtaking view from the holy moountain called Sacro Monte.
